Mole removal for a flawless complexion

Have a beauty mark that you wish wasn't there in the first place? If you're looking at mole removal options for aesthetic purposes, we have all the information you need.

What are moles?

Moles are a cluster of skin cells. Mostly brown or black, they can appear anywhere on the body. While some moles may be cancerous, most are usually benign. However, they can cause distress when they appear on prominent parts of the body, or if they are large enough to warrant unwanted attention.

If you're looking or mole removal options, here are a few options.

Different mole removal techniques

1. Cutting / Excision

In this procedure, local aesthetic is first applied to the mole. Mole removal is then carried out by cutting out the mole, along with a small area of the surrounding skin by the surgeon. This is done using a scalpel or surgical scissors. This procedure is usually used to remove deeper moles that may have cells that have grown underneath the top layer of skin. Cutting these out may require a few stitches after removal to close the skin. The stitching may leave a small scar, of which most should fade over time.

2. Shave removal

For moles that are less deep, they can be shaved down with a scalpel. In this mole removal process, the mole area is similarly numbed first with a local anaesthetic. Shave removal is usually less invasive and expensive to perform, as compared to an excision treatment.

Mole removal is performed using as sharp razor, shaving down the mole. At the end of the procedure, leaving only a small, unnoticeable pink mark. As there is no cutting of the skin involved, no stitches are required.

3. Freezing

Unlike excision and shave removal, which are usually used for cancerous moles, freezing is used for benign ones. Moles that are non-cancerous and have yet to grow to the deeper layers of skin can be frozen off using liquid nitrogen. While freezing may leave a small blister on the skin, it is still a relatively simple mole removal procedure.

4. Laser Removal

Lastly, smaller, non-cancerous moles that do not  protrude above the surface of the skin may also be removed using lasers. This treatment uses intense bursts of light radiation to break down mole cells in the skin. This method usually requires two or three treatments for full mole removal. Laser mole removal is especially effective for removing moles in harder to reach areas, especially on the face. It can also be effective in eliminating multiple moles at a single time.

Can a mole grow back after mole removal treatments?

As moles are made up of active skin cells, some may grow back after mole removal treatments. This may be due to the some mole cells not being removed completely, causing the mole to grow back. Following such cases, it is advisable to return to your dermatologist for a followup mole removal procedure.
