5 Amazing Pore Treatments in Korea You Must Try

At some point in your life, you’ve probably been plagued by unsightly, large pores on your face. What exactly causes large pores and what pore treatments are available in Korea to treat them? Let’s take an in-depth look at what you can do to treat large pores.

What Causes Large Pores

Every person’s skin is covered in tiny hairs, excluding the palms of their hands and feet. Each hair follicle is housed inside a pore.

Each hair follicle has a sebaceous gland, which produces oil. When the sebaceous gland releases this oily substance called sebum, it rises to the top of the skin and collects in the pore.

According to this 2016 study, the primary causes of enlarged pores are:

  • Excessive sebum: This is when a person’s sebaceous gland produces a lot of oil, and they have oily skin.
  • Decreased elasticity around the pore: This is when the skin becomes less supple, and pores appear enlarged.
  • Increased hair follicle volume: This is when the pore at the end of the hair follicle becomes clogged.

When oil collects in the pore and combines with dirt or makeup, the pore can become blocked. This stretches the pore, making it look bigger than it is. If the pore remains clogged, a pimple can develop.

Having large pores is not a health concern. As this 2015 study explains, pore size is purely an aesthetic consideration. Large pores can leave us unconfident in our natural skin, and can cause unsightly textures in our foundation makeup.

Thankfully, there are plenty of treatment options to tackle large pores available at tons of clinics in South Korea. Let's check out a few.

Pore Treatment Options in Korea

BB Laser

BB Laser, also known as Lavieen Laser, helps to tighten large pores and lighten your skin. It also helps even skin tone by eliminating blemishes from sun spots and hyperpigmentation.

The strong 1927 nm wavelength laser minimizes epithelial damage and improves pigmentation such as freckles, blemishes, aging, and loss of elasticity all at the same time.

Aqua Peel

Aqua peeling is a two step process that cleanses your skin deeply but also moisturizes the newly cleaned skin. Often, chemical peels and acne treatments can dry out skin, irritating it even more. This forces oil glands on our face to over produce oil, which then blocks our pores.

During an aqua peel, a layer of AHA is first used to remove all the dirt, blackheads, whiteheads, and dead skin cells from your face. Then, a suction machine will suck up these impurities off the surface of the face and in the pores. Once the skin has been cleaned, moisture is locked in with a nutritious rubber mask.

Skin Botox

Pico Toning

Pico Laser Toning (usually just called Pico Toning) is a great treatment for improving skin discolorations, reducing pores, reducing the appearance of acne scars, improving skin texture, rejuvenating the skin and more. It uses ultra-short pulses of laser light (a picosecond duration) to deliver tightly-focused laser energy to the upper layers of your skin.

The end result of a pico toning laser treatment is a reduction of surface skin problems like pigmentation as well as improvement in  texture, tone, and acne scarring. Patients also see a reduction in wrinkles and shrinking in pores due to collagen production. Read here to see if Pico Toning is right for you!

Methods to Minimize Small Pores at Home

Choosing gel-based cleansers

If you have oily skin, choose a gel-based cleanser. A moisturizing cleanser, such as foam or oil, may leave residue in the pores and increase oiliness. A gel-based cleanser helps to clear oil from the pores, reducing their appearance.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating the skin may be recommended to help remove blockages from the pores.

Choose products containing salicylic acid, which is a natural acid that helps to release debris from the pores.

Although exfoliation keeps the pores unclogged, they can look bigger if the skin becomes too dry. So be sure to keep your skin hydrated.

Moisturizing daily

Moisturizers hydrate and soften the skin. This allows the sebum to penetrate deeper into the skin, rather than to pack pores and stretch them out.
