A Quick Guide To Korean Skin Boosters

What Exactly Are Skin Boosters?

The term “skin boosters” is achieving buzzword status in 2020 among K-Beauty enthusiasts. It can be defined as everything that enhances the skin’s overall condition, but more specifically refers to aesthetic injections placed directly into the skin’s dermis. Outside of Korea, the term is used as a general marketing tactic usually referring to cosmetic serumsand other cosmetic products that are applied on the skin’s surface.

From anti-aging to reducing acne scars— boosters are an excellent source of regenerating the skin from within.

Popular Korean Skin Boosters

There are several types of skin boosters in Korea that vary depending on your skin’s needs.

Rejuran Healer

To target acne scars and enlarged pores, the Rejuran Healer is the best selling skin booster that exists on the market to date. It is an injection approved by the Korean FDA to have effect in improving wrinkles, skin elasticity and volume.

The Rejuran healer contains PN (polynucleotide), a DNA component extracted from salmons, that are known to have the most compatibility with human skin. The PN’s long threads of DNA acts as a supporting structure while healing the skin from its deep tissue, enabling prolonged duration compared to products containing shorter threads of DNA. When injected, the PN safely works in the dermis layer of the skin to regenerate cells, improving its elasticity and reversing damage done. The Rejuran healer is heat-resistant, even when used alone, no adverse effects have been reported yet! For optimal results, 4 sessions are needed with 2 to 3 weeks in between each session. However, treatment regimen varies for every patient and many are happy with the results of Rejuran healer just after one session.

PRP Collagen Injection

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. Plasma is a component of our blood in which all the nutrients are carried. Platelets are found in this plasma and are small fragments that come together to heal injuries like open wounds. PRP is extracted plasma that contains a high concentration of platelets, so this treatment involves first extracting your own blood, getting PRP from your blood, mixing it with other ingredients and then injecting to the treatment area to give results such as increased collagen production, tissue repair and growth of cells.

The biggest advantage of PRP Collagen Injection is that it's using your own blood, so the chance for allergic reaction is lowest. Clinics have various names for PRP Collagen Injection in Korea, like Witch injection, Vampire injection, etc.

Exosome Rejuvenation

For someone who is looking to heal mild skin damage from the sun, or just overall unhealthy skin, then Exosome Therapy is the treatment you need. It is gaining more reputation internationally and becoming one of the best skin care techniques out in the market due to exosome’s benefits. Exosomes were first introduced and made popular in medical science for treating illnesses like cancer and tumours. Although research continues being done to explore exosome’s effects and what other conditions they can treat, in whole— they are proved to have healing and regenerating properties that work amazingly to heal the skin from within.

There are two ways to go about the exosome therapy. You can select the method of exosome delivery from either

  1. Microneedling Therapy System (MTS) or
  2. Iontophoresis (transdermal delivery using voltage gradient).
The MTS method utilizes tiny needles to create very small holes on the skin, invisible to the naked eye. The exosome treatment mask is then applied on top and because of the tiny holes created, the treatment is absorbed deeply into the skin’s deep layers. To heal the tiny holes, this method requires downtime of a few days. The latter method uses an ultrasound to target the skin’s tissues and help accept the exosomes, requiring no downtown to heal.

Where To Get Skin Boosters

Skin boosters are available in other countries outside of Korea, but were originally created in Korea as K-Beauty companies were compelled to launch something more effective and multi-tasking to incorporate in one’s skin care routine.

The actual term of “Skin Boosters” is becoming more obscure as other skin care companies outside of Korea are making by-products including the key word “booster” in their lines. A prime example of this is Lancôme's “Cils Booster XL Enhancing Lash Primer”. It is an eyelash primer that boosts the appearance of lashes after applying mascara, essentially having little or nothing to do with skin care.

How Much Do Skin Boosters Cost?

A typical skin booster procedure can vary from ₩143,000 KRW to ₩1,500,000 KRW within Korea depending on the amount of sessions desired. In other countries like the United States or Europe, a skin booster is usually categorized as a cosmetic surgery (much like fillers or botox), and in-person consultations are needed to determine costs. On the other hand, these so called “skin boosters” are passed and marketed as spa treatments (much like peels) and can vary from $100 USD to $300 USD.
